This is required by StarWind FCoE Initiator. Non-invasive cardiopulmonary monitoring during surgery: a comparison of skin conductance, arterial pressure and capnography. During routine thoracic surgery, the anaesthetist monitors the patient's airway, ventilation and circulation. For over 20 years, capnography has been used to document adequacy of ventilation and to measure the efficiency of the respiratory system. The traditional forms of non-invasive measurement were the measurement of chest expansion and respiratory mechanics. In the last decade, the application of the impedance cardiography technique has expanded considerably. It detects thoracic impedance changes generated by the thoracic fluid and pressure oscillations associated with the cardiac cycle. The system, validated for use during anaesthesia, is able to provide reliable cardiac output measurements. However, this is still a relatively invasive system, which requires an intracardiac catheter and leads. Recently, skin conductance has been investigated as a non-invasive method of monitoring blood pressure and cardiac output. The objective of the present study was to compare the use of non-invasive cardiac output and arterial pressure monitoring with non-invasive thoracic impedance and capnography measurements during routine anaesthesia. Fifty patients undergoing elective thoracic surgery were included in the study. The signals were measured before induction, during surgery and in the recovery room. The outcome of the monitoring was compared to the traditional standard methods of monitoring. The cardiac output obtained by impedance cardiography was closely correlated with the stroke volume, with a correlation coefficient of 0.89, and the mean values of cardiac output by impedance cardiography were comparable to those measured by pulmonary artery catheterisation. Furthermore, the haemodynamic changes during surgery were correctly detected by the impedance cardiography. The outcome of the arterial pressure and skin conductance measurements in the anaesthetic room was also excellent. The input devices of a computer system may be of several types. For example, the input devices may include a keyboard (i.e., a non-mechanical device) or a mouse (i.e., a mechanical device).
